Course scheduling is one of the main challenges in educational systems, especially in Vocational High Schools (SMKs) that offer various programs and subjects. Inefficient scheduling can lead to conflicts, improper time allocation, and even an imbalance in workload for both students and teachers. Therefore, an effective method is needed to address this issue.

The Modified Genetic Algorithm

This research proposes the use of a Modified Genetic Algorithm as a solution to optimize course scheduling in Vocational High Schools. A Genetic Algorithm is a computational method inspired by the natural selection process in Darwin’s theory of evolution. This algorithm works by generating a number of potential solutions and then iteratively improving these solutions through the processes of selection, crossover, and mutation until an optimal solution is reached.

In the context of course scheduling, a Genetic Algorithm can be used to find the best combination of schedules that meet various criteria, such as classroom availability, teacher availability, and student preferences. The modifications applied in this research include the addition of specific strategies to address common scheduling issues, such as schedule conflicts and uneven workload distribution.

Research Findings

The research conducted at a Vocational High School demonstrated that the use of a Modified Genetic Algorithm could produce more efficient schedules compared to traditional scheduling methods. The schedules generated by this algorithm not only reduced the number of conflicts but also improved the utilization of classrooms and teaching time.

Furthermore, this algorithm also allows for greater flexibility in scheduling, making it easier to adjust to changes that may occur, such as the addition of new subjects or changes in student numbers.

Implications and Benefits

The implementation of the Modified Genetic Algorithm in course scheduling at Vocational High Schools offers several significant benefits. First, this algorithm can assist school administrators in creating more efficient and effective schedules, thereby optimizing the learning process. Second, the use of advanced computational technology like this can enhance the quality of education by ensuring that available time and resources are utilized optimally.

Moreover, by reducing scheduling conflicts and increasing efficiency, students can focus more on learning without worrying about inconsistent schedules. Teachers will also find it easier to manage their time, which ultimately contributes to improved teaching quality.

Conclusion

This research shows that the Modified Genetic Algorithm is an effective tool for addressing the challenges of course scheduling in Vocational High Schools. With its ability to generate optimal and flexible schedules, this algorithm can be a valuable solution for schools facing scheduling problems. In the future, the application of this algorithm can be expanded not only for course scheduling but also for various other aspects of educational management.
